Alberobello

The Trullo is a conical type of construction in semiprecious stone, typical of the central and southern Puglia. The Trulli were generally built as temporary shelters in the countryside or permanent homes for farmers. Good part of the agglomeration of Alberobello in the City of Bari consists of trulli. The trullo is an improvement of the prehistoric model tholos, present in various parts of Italy and the Mediterranean; the trulli are characterized by continuity of use to which they were subject. Although in the developing areas of the trulli are found prehistoric archaeological artifacts, or foundations of stone huts from the Bronze Age, there are no particularly ancients trulli: the most ancient ones still existing are dated back to the late seventeenth Century, right next to the plateau of the Murgia Pugliese. The origins of trulli in Puglia and particularly the ones of Alberobello – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – are the subject of research and debate.
